Thoreau
When reading this article and trying to relate it back to the past ideas I had trouble. I would have to consider Thoreau a cyber punk of his time, going against the current of society by telling his time that they only make themselves miserable. He says that people get trapped into labor and this is a mistake. He says that people are caught up in superfluous things so that the finer fruits cannot be enjoyed. The main quote I took out of the article was “For the improvements of ages have had but little influence on the essential laws of man’s existence; as our skeletons, probably, are not to be distinguished from those of our ancestors.” Basically, I understood this to mean that as he says, we only need the basic things in life, and that everything else we consume our lives with imprisons us. For example, I worked this summer in order to buy a computer. It is this mentality that traps us as a people, as I could have used that time, instead of working to smell the roses. I guess I would disagree with his viewpoint. I personally believe in the idea that hard work makes you appreciate something more, so it seems no problem to me that I worked all summer to get something that I enjoy. The life of survival he talks about seems more in tune with an animal’s life, and one I believe not meant for a society. It is true that because of our lifestyle we have lost certain aspects, our necessities become more, for example his explanation of the people around the fire. But I still wouldn’t want to live a life he describes.

I agree with Brain; I would not want to life Thoreau describes. Maybe technology is what "imprisons" our lives today, but I'm okay with that. I think the key, as with everything, is balance. As long as we don't forget things like our relationships/families, it's fine to take advantage of all the resources we have today.
I agree with Brian also. There are too many things that yes I may not need but I'm not going to lie about the fact that I would not want to give them up to live the "simple life" I also agree with Courtney that you just need balance in your life with relationships and family. These can't be replaced and we need them in so many different circumstances, but taking advantages of the things around us doesn't make us bad people...as long as we utilize these resources without doing any harm.
I agree with Brian. Thoreau describes a life that is almost not realistic in our society today. Everyone needs to work in order to get appliances and other things that they need. Although we may not necessarily "need" these things, such as technology devices, most people would not be able to function without them. I dont think that they imprison us at all though. I also agree with what Courtney says about balance. As long as we keep everything in our lives in balance I don't really see a problem with how people are doing things and living their life.
I think maybe we don't have to completely adapt to Thoreau's way of life, but I do think there is some value in learning from his lifestyle. While we don't have to disregard everything in our life, there are some forms of modern excess that we could live without or at least cut back. Do you really need to watch tv for 4 hours a day? Maybe you could only watch 30 minutes a day.
Growing up 30 minutes from Thoreaus hometown has possibly influenced me on this, visiting the little shack he lived in while he did his writing. Its easty to see in this simple life how one can reflect on society and some of the uneeded excessess.
